Ceramic oil burner in dark brown clay placed on a tatami mat with wooden window frame
Artist in Focus: Alex Gabriels
A Series of Ceramic Objects
In collaboration with Belgian ceramist Alex Gabriels, we have created two timeless scent-diffusing objects: a scented candle and an oil diffuser. Each piece is handcrafted and features Alex’s signature rough finish and carved lines, evoking a brutalist sensibility. Both are designed to pair with Róhe’s signature woody-aromatic fragrance, a scent that embodies a distinct and enduring character.

The candle is available in three earthy tones: stone, soil, and clay. Its vessel is designed for permanence, once the candle has burned down, it can be repurposed, giving it a life beyond its original purpose. The oil burner, available in soil, comes with the Róhe burner oil. A tealight gently warms the ceramic bowl, releasing pure aromatic oils to fill any space with a warm, welcoming fragrance. Both objects are functional and decorative, seamlessly merging craftsmanship and scent. Only at the very end do I consider the construction, ensuring that it does not impede my design or creation process. I don’t want to make concessions out of fear that it won't work; we’ll see about that later."

"I get inspiration from everywhere, but I always try to give each piece my own signature touch. I find a certain roughness in my ceramics very important. I think the raw material, the clay, is so beautiful that you have to show it and not hide it under a layer of glaze."

To develop a signature fragrance that conveys the character of Róhe, we have joined forces with Keva, a company highly specialized in manufacturing both fragrances and the aroma ingredients used in them. Their knowledge and heritage dates all the way back to 1922. The concentrated perfume oil used in each Róhe scented candle is made from the purest ingredients and produced in Italy. Some of the key ingredients used in the candle are; cypress, juniper berries, sandalwood, patchouli, and cedarwood.

"Clay is a gift from the earth and I don’t think you should just throw it away. I save all my leftover clay and put it in a big bucket, colour by colour, later I add water to it, I mix it, and I put it on plasterboard to dry so I can reuse it afterwards. Not much clay is wasted here in my studio. Throwing it away is such a waste of the beautiful material, so I try to reuse it all as much as possible."
